Mayurakshi – The Tale of a Father and His Son

Blogger Shreya Dutta

In the words of Frank Clark, “a father is a man who expects his son to be as good a man as he meant to be”. This is, in all senses, the spine of the movie Mayurakshi, releasing this year. It is a Bengali drama film starring mega stars of the Bengali film industry including Soumitra Chatterjee and our very own Bumba Da – Prosenjit Chatterjee, among others.

The movie narrates the secretly emotional tales of a middle – aged man Aryanil and his octogenarian father, Sushovan, who is a former professor of History, and quite a brilliant professor at that. However he is currently suffering from the age related neurological disorders and problems. The emotional upheavals, and how we manage to go through the thick and thin of life’s course while still maintaining emotional and professional bonds successfully, have been portrayed beautifully in the film

Shooting for the movie started this August and all actors were quite excited about this. Prosenjit Chatterjee in particular, seemed extremely happy about playing son to the veteran Tollywood actor Soumitra Chatterjee. They do share a very close bond, not unlike that between a father and his son, and consequently, Prosenjit feels that the lines would be coming out more naturally and less acting would be needed. Prosenjit and Soumitra have acted in many films before this movie, but this will be the first time where in they will be playing the roles of central characters.

Soumitra Prosenjit

The central characters are played by Dadasaheb Phalke Award recipient Soumitra Chatterjee (Sushovan) and Tollywood heart-throb Prosenjit Chatterjee (Aryanil). Indrani Haldar, Sudipta Chakraborty, Gargee Roy Choudhury have taken up supporting roles for this movie.

Atanu Ghosh Director Mayurakhi

The film has been skillfully written and directed by Atanu Ghosh. The screenplay too, is by Atanu Ghosh. His first film which did turn out to be a significant one, was Angshumaner Chhobi in 2009. Prosenjit Chatterjee has expressed that he is very much in awe with the work of the director, saying that he trusts him completely, and that he has immense faith in the script of the upcoming movie.

This movie is going to be Atanu Ghosh’s 6th film with Soumitra Chatterjee, but the first one with Prosenjit, who was first introduced to Atanu Ghosh through Rituparno Ghosh.

The film has been produced by Friends Communication, in association with Firdausul Hasan, Debojyoti Mishra and Prabal Halder, in collaboration with PSS Entertainments.

The name of the film, as you will have noticed, is Mayurakshi, but it’s story is essentially a male dominated one, quite unlike the present trend of woman – oriented genre in films today. The director however did not want to reveal the significance behind the naming of the movie, choosing to keep it a secret. The film has a strong archival value and will surely have a strong influence on the hearts of the audience, and if you want to explore deep into the complicated bonds of a father and his son, surely you are heading the right way.
